YMCA Masters Swimmers Compete Alcatraz Sharkfest

Two Finish First in Age Group & 1 Top 10 Finish Overall Braving 60-degree water temperatures, eight Rockford-area swimmers recently completed the 1.5-mile Alcatraz Sharkfest. Seven of the eight swimmers are part of the YMCA of Rock River Valley Masters Swim Team. The Y’s Masters Swim Team is a competitive team for swimmers over the age of 18.

The Alcatraz Sharkfest took place on June 4. Swimmers cross the San Francisco Bay from Alcatraz Island to the Aquatic Park in San Francisco – the same swim the Anglin Brothers and Frank Lee Morris successfully attempted in their escape from Alcatraz on the night of June 12, 1962.

Nearly 900 swimmers competed in the event. We are proud of our swimmers – with two coming in first in their age group and a top-ten overall finish.
